Butler Wash Overlook is a moderate one-mile out and back walking trail leading to a stunning view of several Ancestral Puebloan structures dating to 1200 CE. From the parking area, this slickrock trail guides you across the mesa top where you will encounter plant identification signs ending at an overlook perched above Butler Wash. The cliff dwelling features multiple habitation, storage, and ceremonial structures which can be seen from this ideal vantage point. There are a few shaded benches along the trail, though it's always good to be prepared for all conditions. Vault toilets are available at the overlook and trailhead.
Special Considerations
There is a large parking lot equipped with a toilet and plenty of parking space for larger vehicles and RVs, however, be prepared to pack in water and pack out your trash.
- Tips For Visiting Here with Respect
Avoid Building Cairns
Building cairns can impact sensitive sites and are a form of vandalism to the natural world. You might not realize it, but some stacked stones may be ancestral shrines. Leave placement of trail directional signs and leveling of cairns to land managers.
Guide Children Through Sites
Sacred cultural sites are not playgrounds. Teach children to respect these places so they can share them with future generations and become better stewards of the land. Keep a close eye on them so they don’t get hurt or accidentally damage cultural belongings.
Pay Your Fees
It may not seem like much, but your small fee helps support important monitoring, enforcement, and amenities like toilets.
