Are you passionate about dark skies? Become a Dark Sky Ambassador with Bears Ears Partnership!
Bluff was designated a Dark Sky Community by the International Dark Sky Association in July 2025, after years of collaboration between the Town of Bluff, community partners, and BEP. You can read more about the journey to protect Bluff’s Dark Skies in this article from Education Director Sarah Burak. While this designation marks an important milestone in gaining international recognition, we need volunteers to support ongoing preservation of these dark skies.
As an ambassador, you’ll play a key role in community education and outreach, and ongoing monitoring to meet the requirements of Dark Sky designation. Our Ambassador program trains dark sky enthusiasts to monitor light pollution, as well as how to operate telescopes and identify celestial features. You will develop cultural and scientific literacy of dark skies, and can be trained to lead public star parties to educate and engage the Bears Ears region. No experience or equipment necessary – we will provide you with everything you need. If you want to bring your own telescope, you are welcome to. Anyone can become a Dark Sky Ambassador – you don’t need to live in Bluff, and there is no minimum time requirement.
