Carol Patterson, PhD on "The Katsina Runners and Rain Bringers"

Join us at the BEEC or on Zoom for a presentation by Carol Patterson, PhD on "The Katsina Runners and Rain Bringers. Registration is ONLY necessary for virtual attendees - registrants will receive the Zoom link with their confirmation of registration.

This presentation examines the use of ancient roads that link up prehistoric sites in the Upper San Juan region. Evidence of these roads from LiDar maps and ethnographic documentation supports the theories of their use by ritual running and relay races to draw out the Cloud Beings for rain. Petroglyphs of the runners are found in proximity to these ancient roads of which there are three types; long distance for trade, short distance for relays and circular fr ceremonies.

This presentation will include:

-Petroglyphs of runners

-LiDar maps of ritual running roads

-Music with slides of Indigenous women and men who run long distances, relay races, and ceremonial circuits.
