Bears Ears Partnership (BEP) works to protect and build respect for the cultural and natural landscapes of the greater Bears Ears region. BEP has been an essential local voice for protecting the culturally rich, publicly managed lands of southeast Utah since 2010.BEP accomplishes its mission through five primary focus areas:

Program Summary 

The Canyon Country Youth Corps (CCYC) is a program operated by the Bears EarsPartnership in Monticello, Utah. CCYC provides young adults with opportunities to complete service projects on public lands in Southeastern Utah in partnership with the land-managing agencies of the region. Service Projects include trail maintenance and construction; fence construction, repair or demolition; habitat restoration; mechanical and non-mechanical vegetation thinning; invasive species removal and treatment; and other conservation related projects in backcountry and front country settings.

The CCYC Field Coordinator is an AmeriCorps position that provides field operations support to ensure crews have sufficient resources to meet their job needs, and complete projects safely and effectively.

After a period of training with the CCYC Manager, the Field Coordinator will be assisting with the Crew Leader Development Program (CLDP) in early spring, and provide field support for summer/fall young adult crews.

Primary responsibilities include assisting CCYC Manager with training Crew Leaders on technical and interpersonal skills, coordinating with CCDC staff and agency partners, and maintaining Corps resources in the shop and bunkhouse.

The Field Coordinator often travels to remote field sites to support staff and members. They will spend 80% of their time in the field. Project sites are either front-country or back-country (accessible through hiking or rafting). The position will be responsible for the quality control and overseeing execution of high quality of work with multiple Crews on chainsaw, fencing, and/or trails projects, while assisting with scheduled time for crew member development activities. These activities include discussion, critical thinking scenarios, writing development and conservation lessons.

DUTIES

Program Logistics: 

  • Manage and organize a clean and efficient operations center (CCYC Basecamp).
  • Maintain and repair equipment and tools. 
  • Assist in the supervision of de-rigs and re-supply of tools, equipment and food for all crews.
  • Assist in maintaining an accurate inventory of CCYC tools, equipment and supplies. 
  • Maintain a clean and functional food storage area, while facilitating efficient meal planning and shopping by crew leaders. 
  • Plan for the logistics associated with new programs as they arise, and prepare hitch plans and project documents. 
  • Coordinate the repair and maintenance of CCYC vehicles with other staff. 
  • Support project data collection and photography.
  • Assist CCYC Coordinator and Corps Support Services as advised. 

General Administration: 

  • Work within the established program budget in association with the CCYC Manager.
  • Assist with field site visits and complete reports with necessary documentation. 
  • Ensure compliance with CCYC/BEP safety policies and procedures.
  • Document safety or conduct concerns and assist with corrective action.
  • Meet regularly with other CCYC staff members. 
  • Maintain records related to equipment, vehicles, incidents and field operations.

Field Support and Risk Management: 

  • Provide support, evaluation, and guidance to Crew Leaders during field visits.
  • Enforce all organizational Policies and Procedures in the field and at Basecamp.
  • Assist in on-the-ground project quality by providing technical assistance to crews as needed.
  • Assist crew with essential resupplies in the field, if needed.
  • Identify and address safety concerns and operational needs.
  • Participate in a rotating call schedule for after-hours crew emergency support.
  • Provide direct crew or field coverage, when needed.

Necessary Skills and Qualifications

  • Required - Experience with a conservation corps, youth corps, outdoor education program, or outdoor-based youth-development program.
  • Experience in all or most of the following is preferred: trail construction & maintenance, chainsaw operation & maintenance, hand tool maintenance, fencing, vegetation management, backcountry travel, leading backcountry crews and rafting.
  • S-212 Wildland Fire Chainsaw training or equivalent certification is preferred, will be required if not already certified.
  • Wilderness First Aid certification or higher is preferred, and will be required if not already certified.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and teaching, coaching and mentoring skills.
  • Effective conflict resolution and team building skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a fast-paced team.
  • Positive attitude and ability to have fun while working outdoors with young adults.
  • Ability to remain calm and flexible in remote and changable conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license, insurable driving record, and acceptable background check.

Physical/Essential Requirements 

This position requires periodic overnight travel and non-traditional work hours, including some weekend and evening hours.

To successfully perform essential functions, the candidate is required to sit, stand, walk, speak and hear. The Field Coordinator must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, lift, and carry equipment. They must be able to hike and work on rough, uneven, and remote terrain in varying weather conditions. 

The position may require extended physical activity and work in backcountry environments. The Field Coordinator must be able to operate vehicles, computers, office equipment, hand tools, and field equipment. The Field Coordinator may be required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds without assistance.
